Current Position: Asset Investment Programme Manager, Northumbrian Water Limited
NEC Experience: Northumbrian Water have been using the NEC family of contracts since 2000 and we are progressively realizing the benefits of more disciplined project management, and the flexibility the NEC affords in order to deliver a broad range of construction projects. We have adopted the NEC3 suite of conditions for all contracts and consultant commissions across our capital programme and in 2015 awarded a NEC3 Framework Agreement with our contracting partners and have held Gold Membership of the NEC Users’ Group for the same period.

Northumbrian was have been ranked as the No.1 water company in the British Water Survey for their contractual approach for six of the last seven years. British Water is the trade association for the UK water industry supply chain and each year conducts a survey of the 12 water and sewerage companies comparing performance in areas such as contract procurement, contractual approach, impact on the supply chain, professional qualities and communication.

I am a Chartered Civil Engineer with over twenty five years’ experience in contracting, consulting and client organisations and have had exposure to NEC contracts since 2000. Since 2004 I have fulfilled the role of Asset Investment Programme Manager leading teams of project managers delivering the Northumbrian Water capital programme. I have been responsible for the procurement and delivery of a wide range of investment projects utilising the full suite of NEC contracts with a budgetary responsibility of £30m per annum. In 2012 I achieved Registered Project Professional status with the Association for Project Management.

In addition to leading the Asset Investment Water Projects North delivery team I fulfilled the role of Employer for the Preferred Option Development stage of the £46m Horsley Water Treatment Works Phase 2 project. This included a competitive two stage tendering process working collaboratively with two contracting organisations to develop proposed solutions ahead of awarding a £37m design & construct contract.

In 2016 I prepared a business case and launched the Construction Support team in the Asset Investment department. The Construction Support team has the objective to develop, manage and lead construction and contract support services for the capital programme encompassing the following functions:
•    Be NWL’s Centre of Excellence for contract administration and site supervision
•    Provide leadership for technical, and commercial assurance services

•    Lead and manage all ECC PM and ECC Supervisor services for Asset Investment
We are realising significant benefits associated with in-house construction support in terms of consistency of approach and holding the core knowledge within the business in line with the principle of enhancing NWL status as a Professional Client.
